Sometimes I have to believe the arrogance that I can write and on certain issues, sometimes it seems to work reasonably fair, that is, unless my friends and readers are patronizing me. But when it comes to true love of my life, boxing, I seem to have to express myself to all kinds of problems. I hope that is not the case here, this essay is too specific and too spiritual for this to happen. This is Bobby Chacon and if anyone deserves special treatment, is Bobby.
Bobby "Schoolboy Chaconwas in the Boxing Hall of Fame last year and that made me very happy. You see, Bobby was my favorite wrestler, and since I have literally thousands of fights during my 68 years seen life and consider myself a kind of fan, I hope that recognition involves at least a minimum weight. Hell, I've seen them all, "bum of the month", the excitement that Bob Satterfield, the struggles between Charles, Louis and Walcott. LaMotta-Robinson, Ward-Gatti, Ward-GreenWard-Augustus, Zale-Graziano, Correlas-Castillo, Ali-Frazier, Patterson-Johansson, Barrera-Morales. I saw Sugar Ray send Dave Boy Green into dreamland with …… perfect left hook and a witness of the illogic of Hearns Duran put in order immediately with a deadly, and then brutally Duran Barkley and then Barkley knocked out Hearns. I watched Leotis Martin Sonny Liston strength. Bruce Brooks Curry and Monroe will go to the abyss, and Kid Paret, Laverne Roach, Duk Koo Kim, Johnny Owens andLeavander Johnson leave everything in the ring. I witnessed the spirit numbing suddenness of the battle Mesa-Garza and shootings between Moorer-Cooper and Lyle, Foreman. The slow slide Jerry Quarry and many others. I feel the first signs …… Phrasing monotonous …… the nose. I saw the epiphany of Foreman. The disappointment that was Tyson. I was dazzled by the magic, hear and see music and dance. I pray for Michael Watson, Gerald McClellan and Greg Page andI remember the courage of Robert Wangila, Pedro Alcazar, Scotland and Beethoven. I saw some very good things, some not so good, and some very ugly, but nothing comes close to what I saw and heard during a period 1978-1982, with three warriors with names of Chacon, Limon and Boza-Edwards .
Bobby Chacon was born 28th November 1951 in Sylmar, CA. It was a tough guy to Mexican-American and was soon in the gym. E 'was an amateur world championship belt diamondand fought in the National Golden Gloves tournament in the two years 1971 and 1972. He turned in favor of Los Angeles in 1972, while attending California State University Northridge earned his nickname of "student."
With a fearless, wild and largely exciting style, he immediately became fan favorite. While the word "could describe racket" at best he was also an experienced bat off the ropes may slide the blows. Although short, a long reach advantage was deceptive. Was oftenwilling to absorb heavy punishment, to gauge and this likely contributed to his later difficulties. Removes has 23 of his first 25 opponents, including a TKO over Chucho Castillo and an electrifying, career round TKO victory to improve to ninth on the future Hall of Fame Danny "Little Red" Lopez. His only loss at that point was an attack on 9 Ruben Olivares hard round in 1973. The following year he was Alfredo Marcano in nine rounds to capture for the WBC crown feathers.Successfully defended against Jesus Estrada but lost the title to rival Olivares in 1975 (which eventually defeated by the decision in their third game in 1977).
But the genesis of this story began in 1975 when he took on Rafael "Bazooka" Limon in Mexacali, Mexico. Bobby lost around ten choice, but began a four-match rivalry that compares with the best boxing history. Neither liked the other boxer and the word "Grudge" was often mentioned. The two would have fought a technicalcreated in 1979. Chacon then stepped into the class and got the great Alexis Arguello by knockout in the seventh round. Then, what is still a big rivalry would become, has dramatically by KO to Ugandan Cornelius Boza-Edwards lost in round 14 Bobby could not turn 14 until her left eye is almost closed and cut off the nose terrible. This loss was seen by many as a swan song for Bobby accepted, and was encouraged to take a hard look out, but hewould have none of it.
He put together a winning streak and began to make their way up the rankings again. But during that time, the other story that others often write ….. the personal side, and self-destructive life of Bobby ….. was in turmoil. But unlike other not because I really think that the part of Bobby Chacon decline, which was the fighter. Suffice it to say that his personal life was pure and genuine tragedy, and I do not have theInclination (or perhaps not comment on the literary ability) melodramtic their due. If Bobby was not an angel in his personal life, he certainly was a lion in the ring and that's where my attention and memory remain.
Now, after his defeat against Boza-Edwards, his fourth and last meeting with Limon was planned and fought. According to Ring and KO Magazine The Ring En Espanol, the fight against Chacon-Limon quarter of the year and was fighting the decade. First, you rocked and should have thenanother. Both would be the floor. Bobby was cut, bleeding, bruised and ready to go back only to its own brand shot. Chacon had suffered bleeding after knockdowns in round 3-10, drop Limon in the closing seconds of round 15, and an uncontested decision in the near Cinch Bu. Sure, he would not go to Limon, Bobby can not win. I lived in Boston remember the time and jumped from his chair, spilling beer and food all over the place and my friends and screambold at the top of my voice, "Get him Bobby, for him, knocked on the door." And it does. The result was: Judge Angel L. Guzman 142-141, Judge Carlos Padilla 143-141 and Judge Tamotsu Tomihara 141-140.
This was the battle that changed me from dedicated boxing fan full of drug addicts and I do apologize for that. This struggle, the essence of toe to toe action ebb and flow back and forth, was breathtaking and I mean everything lietrally. It was as if two closeMen can come to death without fear, at least if you want, and still survive. Limon actually had a strange smile on his face while he was the last time and getting up, I swear on a stack of bibles that he smiled at the crowd. It was almost mystical, surreal, perhaps what you put out label. All I know is that I will never forget the 15th Round of this fight. "I did after the fight broke Limon," he says. "I did not know how the guy with and it all startshappened …… I could not sleep, could not eat ………"
Incredibly, Bobby would then continue to defend against Boza-Edwards at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas to retain his crown nor a "battle of the year" and I was crying again. Trading vicious circle hooks throughout, this is almost Limon fight for its share of ebb and flow, and sheer ferocity. Ring Magazine called this the fight of the year 1983, contains the second series Bobby. Again Chaconrose from a precipitate (this time in the first round) and despite a deep cut and dangerous, has dropped Boza Edwards in round twelve, while the crowd roared approval and as Bobby avenged the earlier defeat and retain his WBC junior crown light. A fight was unreal, but my God, another one? How to participate? As the Limon fight won the unanimous decision against Boza-Edwards was surreal in its spectacular, but unfortunately …… that would be the last link to the BobbyGlory.
Stripped of his title in June 1983 to fight for the refusal to Hector Camacho in his native Puerto Rico, Chacon's win is therefore not a third world title, but was by lightweight champion Ray stopped "Boom Boom" Mancini in third round, one-way in 1984 (and the boxes as it happened, Greg Haugen would do the same Mancini in 1992 and then himself, woud return the favor by Thomas Damgaard in 03). I last saw Bobby fight in 1985 when he exposed bruatalizedup-and-coming Reno Davey Montana won seven consecutive matches against strong competition, including close to Freddie Roach and Arturo Frias his career in 1988 with a 59-7-1 (47 KO) record and a legacy as one of the most interesting and popular fighter in boxing.
But his personal life was again marred by tragedy, when his son was murdered in 1991. Later, Bobby was in a public appearance in 1996 discovered the Pay-Per-View fight between De La Hoya and Chavez to be seen. Since 2000 he hasposesions all had lost his material, including his house, yard and several cars. But even more tragic, was now, after all, suffers demenetia pugistica, a condition that sometimes occurs between ex-combatants who take too many blows to the head. Bobby's speech is unclear and often language, his poor memory and now he is unsteady on his legs. In 2002, "USA Today ran a story detaiing his residence to a temporary station in Los Angeles, where local nonprofit groups buy roomsfor the homeless. He was 47 and living with a disability pension from the social security has been seen in search of aluminum cans in the streets and courtyards of the waste to support themselves.
I do not know exactly where it is today, perhaps he lives with his mother. He was clearly seen with Mike Weaver and a group of other former boxer California in 2005 for an autograph signing event in Los Angeles, but I'm not sure if I really want to know more. The memories that I want to be the breathtakingthis late in the afternoon in my room Boston, when I saw his life and death struggles with Bazooka Limon and Boza-Edwards Conrelius, battles in which he was in the middle of the ring more like an appearance as a boxer and seem to say "Come, make this special, I am willing to pay the price." It was a determined and indomitable warrior, there stood a fighter.
Quite simply, Bobby Chacon had the biggest heart of a boxer fights I have ever seen. Win or lose,He gave everything he had. And wherever he is, I know that wearing his trademark has done by insinuating smile than when it is inserted into the Hall last year.
"As much as I love boxing, I hate him. And as I love him, hate him." Budd Schulberg
